Critical behavior of specific heat in a smectic-nematic phase transition in the liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8 CB)
Precision measurements of the specific heat Cp of the liquid crystal 8 CB are performed. Combined analysis of the temperature dependence of Cp in the nematic phase in the smectic-^-nematic phase transition and nematic-isotropic liquid phase transition permitted separating these anomalies and determining the critical indices of the specific heat. It is shown that the region of the smectic-A-nematic phase transition studied experimentally is the region of the transition from tricritical to critical behavior.
