Surface atomic structure at Cu(100) chlorination observed with scanning tunneling microscopy
The surface structure of Cu(100) after chlorine adsorption and thermal desorption in ultra high vacuum was studied with STM. In both adsorption and desorption regimes the presence of adsorbed chlorine was not detectable by STM at coverages smaller than full monolayer. We report for the first time atomic resolution STM images of the Cu(100)-c(2 χ 2)-Cl phase and we show that the growth of a thicker chloride phase at room temperature occurs by the formation of multiatomic layer islands.
